BAnQ - Bibliothèque et Archives nationales Québec

Go to this site (only in French) (This link will guide you to the correct place, otherwise please follow the indications below).

Let's make an example with Saint-Louis-de-l'Île-aux-Coudres parish. BAnQ uses sometimes not evident parish names and you need to search on Google. (Example Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul for Baie-St-Paul or Saint-François-d'Assise for Beauceville). Our example is Philomène Gagnon born 29 November 1841, died 14 April 1881 and married 17 July, all in L'Île-aux-Coudres.

  1. On the right assure that "Patrimoine québécois" is checked and under "Type de document" below "Registres de l'état civil"
  2. More below under "Paroisse" search for your parish. You may enter only a part of the name, example "Coudres" -> Click the link "Saint-Louis-de-l'Île-aux-Coudres.
  3. The parish is displayed on the left. You are now here
    http://numerique.banq.qc.ca/patrimoine/details/52327/3945886
  4. Click a year (in our case 1841). The list containing the years may disappear, click on the red + on the right to display it again. Select your sheet and copy the URL address.

  5. Paste the link in the baptism of your file (link icon)
  6. Visualize the result for Philomène Gagnon
  7. Search for another parish by clicking on the tree lines beside the home icon on the left top, then "Patrimoine québécois" and "Registres de l'état civil"

For more information, visit http://numerique.banq.qc.ca/p/aide/registres_etat_civil/

Sometimes it is difficult to find the right parish, because BAnQ uses the names of the parishes instead of the names of the municipalities, so Sainte-Jeanne-de-Chantal is Île-Perrot and Sainte-Jeanne-de-Neuville is Pont-Rouge.

To help you, we have added a list of the main parishes. Please click here to view it. We add additional details as information becomes available. If you have any, please contact us. Thank you.

We have also added the codes according to BAnQ. It can also be found in the old PDF links. The parish is unfortunately not visible, but you can find it easily. In the name of the links you find a code starting with CE. For example CE605S20. Two codes must be separated by a comma, the second begins with an S. Thus: CE605,S20. This code allows you to find Saint-Damien, Joliette in the list.
