I have been trying to understand Québec's naming systems for places. I have been trying many years.

In the list of "Parishes of Quebec" there is a column titled "District". What does that most closely correlate to? The old county names? The new RCM names? Some other geographical area larger than a hamlet/villiage/town,city?

Le mot "comté" pourrait être utilisé à la place de district.

La paroisse est plus liée à la religion alors que le district fait plus référence à l'administration civile.

Renee, Thank you for your offer AND your service to the library. I continue to add names to my database from this wonderful site but have many seperate problematic issues with the Québecian place names. I have studied the 2002-2006 Merger and De-merger event. I have seen lists of RCMs, old county names, regions MRCGs, etc., etc.

I have copied and pasted the entire List of Parishes into a spreadsheet where I can sort on each column and I can check the ones off that I have in my datase. Many of the ones I have in my database I cannot find even after searching the list and Wikipedia for a parish, town, hamlet, city, villiage, unicorporated community, urban comunity, urban amalgamation, urban agglomeration, municipality, provincial electoral district, township municipality, county, RCM, MRCG, rural municipality, TE, region, administrative region, territory, district, etc. Phew. Thank God I can regognize the provinces and I know the country, lol.
