Back to record of: Peter Stevens

The only German Jew known to have flown RAF bombers in WW2. He committed identity theft to join the RAF in 1939, and was the object of a manhunt by British Police as a potential enemy spy. Shot down and taken POW by the Nazis (after flying 22 combat missions), he was a prisoner in his own country for 3 years and 8 months with no protection under the Geneva Convention. He went on to become one of the greatest POW escapers of WW2. After the war he was awarded Britain's Military Cross for extreme bravery. He is the subject of the biography "Escape, Evasion and Revenge: The True Story of a German-Jewish RAF Pilot Who Bombed Berlin and Became a POW".
