Norm, an only child, grew up in Goldpines and Ear Falls, Ontario before moving to Kapuskasing.

The photo is Norm's parents Annonciade & Ed Smith circa 1935 in front of their home in the initial Ear Falls Hydro colony. Ed was an operator at Ear Falls Generating Station from start-up in 1929, and had worked on its construction.
