Biography Wilbert-Darrel Guy
Wilbert Guy Obituary
GUY - Darrel Guy beloved husband of Leona Guy of Kelvington, formerly of Lintlaw passed away on December 14, 2024 he was 86 years of age.
Darrel was born on August 31, 1938 to Bill and Hazel Guy on the family homestead north of Lintlaw, SK. Even though they eventually moved away from the homestead, it held a very special place in Darrel’s heart and he visited the site as often as he was able to. In fact, rumour has it that somewhere in the bush up there is an old wrecked truck of his.
Darrel was the oldest of 3 children that Bill and Hazel had. After Darrel came Elaine and Myron and there was also another baby boy that was lost in the first few days of infancy. Darrel attended local one-room School Houses for his early education then went on to live in a dorm and attend high school at Sturgis High School. He had many stories to tell of his escapades in Sturgis. After School he began working just south of Churchill for the railroad and often told stories of disbelief of being entrusted with the duties, he was given at only 19 years of age but also stated that he “learned the meaning of responsibility” while on that job up north.
From there he worked his way east doing various jobs. Some of the more interesting ones being, working at a tobacco farm, working on the tarmac at the Toronto airport, repairing oil furnaces, driving cattle trucks and driving flatbeds. It was during this time in 1971, at the age of 32 that Darrel met his match during a disagreement over a jukebox and a quarter, and ultimately fell in love with Leona Normand, his partner for the rest of his life.
Darrel and Leona were married on Mar 25, 1972 in Martinsdale, Quebec, amongst family and friends and began their adventure as a married couple together. Darrel and Leona were soon blessed with 2 daughters Cheryl (1974) and Chantal (1977) and their family unit was complete. In 1975 the small family returned to SK where they resided in numerous communities over the years before retiring back in Lintlaw in 1997. Eventually Darrel and Leona moved to Kelvington in 2019, to be closer to amenities.
All who knew Darrel knew that he was a very hard worker no matter what he was doing, whether it be work or volunteering with the local junior hockey team or helping with one of the girls’ various sports. He was always busy, but he also made sure he spent time with his family. This was no more evident than when he was taking the girls to hockey, ringette and skating. For many, many years this involved driving over an hour just to get to the city to practice because that’s where the best coaches were for the girls, and they would get the best.
Darrel didn’t have a lot of free time while being a parent however in his younger years, he enjoyed snowmobiling down east in Quebec and loved fishing with his dad. In his retirement he loved fishing and went as often as he was able too. Darrel was also a very competitive person so the fish seemed to grow each time he told a fishing story.
Darrel is survived by his loving wife Leona, his daughters Cheryl (Bart) and Chantal; his grandchildren, Jordon (Danny), Alyssa, Quinton (Megan), Samuel, Sawyer, and Corwin; and his great- grandchildren, Oryianna, Hayden, Damien and Stetson; his siblings, Elaine and Myron and his Uncle Hubert Guy as well as many nieces and nephews.
Darrel was predeceased by his parents Bill and Hazel, his baby brother, many uncles and aunts and friends from past and present.
Darrel will be missed by all who knew him. He was one of a kind.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday December 28, 2024 from the Kelvington Senior Center with Doreen Day, Certified Celebrant officiating.
