The Notre Dame Scholastic Magazine Obituary, Nov 16, 1912:

“With sadness we chronicle the death of Louis Hickey who passed away at his home in South Bend last Saturday, and was laid to rest in Cedar Grove cemetery Tuesday morning. Mr. Hickey was probably the last of the old pioneers who founded South Bend. He was an intimate friend of Father Sorin, and his life was closely connected with the University. He cut the first road from Notre Dame to South Bend, and spent forty active years in building Sacred Heart church and other University buildings. He helped place the big bell in its present place in the tower of the church, and his name is inscribed on it. On account of Mr. Hickey’s close friendship with the founder of the order, and out of respect for a life well spent, the huge bell was tolled Tuesday morning. The deceased was held high in esteem of his fellow citizens, because of his important part in the building of the city. He is survived by a wife and a large family of children and grandchildren.”
