Biographie Benson Robert
Benson, Robert Carter – February 16, 1927 – January 3, 2022
Affectionately known as Uncle Bean and Grumpa.
This may be unconventional photo for a memorial tribute, but our dad, Robert Carter
Benson, beloved husband of dearly departed Suzy Cue Benson, son to Mabel and Harry
Benson, was an unconventional man. He passed peacefully with his family surrounding him
in the ICU unit of the Welland Hospital.
Robert's happy places were on water (he loved fishing), on earth (he loved northern
adventures) and in air (he too was a pilot). He also enjoyed the quietude of a tiny room
where he happily tinkered away with electronics. He loved to sing songs of all sorts- songs
he made up: "It's morning time, it's morning time, out on the Ponderosa", and songs of
glory and praise: "Jesus, Jesus, Spirit, Spirit". He has a close relationship with Jesus and
praised Him through song to his last breath. Papa loved all of his children (Linda, Rick, Todd,
Rob and Lissa, Jennifer and Roy) and grandkids (Freddie, Jamie, Chrissy, Richard, Leslie,
Ashley, Cedine, Cyannea, Calee, Paige, Connor, Jordan) Great Grandkids (Cyrus, Sephy,
Melody, Hunter, Tyler, Lila, Liam, Ella and Harriet) and expressed that if he were a bird, he
would like to be an Eagle with talons big enough to carry all of us home with him- along
with a 10 pound salmon! He will be sadly missed for the exuberance and tenacity with
which he embraced his faith and met each challenge of aging – he was never alone. His
example of hope, acceptance and "peace that passeth understanding" was an inspiration to
all who met him. Though at heart an introvert, his gregarious personality shone in social
settings - where he might grace us with a song, or a poem, a biblical quote, some of his
homemade Kickapoo Joy Juice, or a witty comment. Even in hospital in the direst of straits,
he could get staff to chuckle.
He will be remembered for the sweet sparkle in his spirit, his firecracker wit, and his melodic
voice. He loved and lived so bravely. He was our Captains Courageous.
