Biographie Therese Guite

Mexico (1955-1956)

What was originally expected to be a two month separation in Percé, turned into nearly two years. At the suggestion of her father, Thérèse went to Mexico with David (without the knowledge of his father.)  It was likely the spring of 1955 when she left Canada for Mexico. She went to San Miguel d’Allende to recuperate from the spiritual devastation she experienced in the Sampson family in New Jersey. Also living there were her sister Suzanne & her husband Alberto Tommi (with their son, Thomas who was a month older than David). Suzanne had flown from Montreal to Mexico City, then to Vera Cruz in Nov 1954.

San Miguel is world renowned for its school of arts & is also known for its 17th century Spanish architecture (which underwent remarkable renovation in the 1980’s (shortly after I learned this from Thérèse). I recall that Thérèse said I was cared for by Dominican nuns in a nursery day care, likely when she was going to classes. Her “Curriculum Vitae” (Resume) stated Thérèse studied for & completed her Master’s Degree in fine arts (1953-55) from the University of Mexico at San Miguel d’Allende. The actual year was 1955.

One evening in April 1955, Thérèse attended a lavish party in San Miguel d’Allende (or in Cuernavaca.) She caught the eye of a young man named Oliverio Fernandez Sanchez. He asked her to dance. Later at the party, an intensely jealous woman pushed Thérèse backwards, injuring her. Oliverio saved her life (according to Thérèse), and the two of them fell in love. She began an adulterous relationship, age 32, with Oliverio, age 21. In August 1955, she obtained a Mexican divorce in Tacuba, a suburb of Mexico City (not legally recognized in the U.S.) On Sept.24, 1955 she married Oliverio de Fernandez. Born to a very wealthy aristocratic Mexican family, Oliverio’s parents had already chosen another well-connected woman for him to marry, and were determined not to allow his love for Thérèse to interfere with their plans. About a month after Thérèse married Oliverio, he had an affair with a local Mexican belle, resulting in her pregnancy! The two Mexican families vowed that they would break up the first marriage of Oliverio and Thérèse before the second baby would be born (in about June).

Francisco & Olivier were born (one-month) prematurely on Dec.30, 1955 in a hospital  in Mexico City. According to a legal disposition by their father in 5/21/56, their Cuernavaca-registered names were: Carlos Pablo Francisco Fernandez Guité, and Juan Ernesto Oliverio Fernandez Guité.
