Sanschagrin, Sister Marie Ursule - 1902 - 1972
Sister Marie Ursule was born Mary Lucy on May 18, 1902 to Robella Morin and Joseph Sanschagrin. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in St. Paul on September 8, 1923. She professed final vows on August 15, 1929. She gratudated from Benson High School (Benson, MN). She earned a BA in French/History from the College of St. Catheirne (St. Paul, MN) and an MA in Romance/History from the University of Minnesota (Minneapolis, MN). She received her Ph.D. in French Litterature form Laval University (Quebec, Canada). She was also awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study in France in 1951. Her Doctoral thesis, Civilisation traditionelle des Lavalois, which is an in depth study of French-Canadian folklore from the Laval region, was highly praised and respected by French-Canadian and French folklorists alike. It was still thought an essential peice of folklore analysis at the time of her death.
S. Marie Ursule taught French at Derham Hall High School (St. Paul, MN). She also taught at the College of St. Catherine. During this time she served as prefect of both Whitby and Caecilian Halls. She took a hiatus from teaching French to complete her PhD and for her Fulbright scholarship but returned to teaching in 1951.
In 1934 Sister Marie Ursule was named the principal of Derham Hall High School. She lived with the students and directed their studies; counseled and guided them as needed; and, became their "second family." She continued this role until she left for study in Canada.
In 1951, S. Marie Ursule took on duties in the Alumnae Office at St. Catherine, where she was named advisor. In 1955 she became the Executive Secretary of the Alumane Association. She continued teaching in the French department while she was doing her Alumnae Relations work.
S. Marie Ursule died on November 16, 1972 at Samaritan Hospital (St. Paul, MN). Her funeral was held at Our Lady of Victory Chapel, the College of St. Catherine. She is interred at Resurrection Cemetery (Mendota Heights, MN).
