E. Joseph McCann, 72, Dickinson, died June 30, 1998, in a Bismarck hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Mandan, with the Revs. Robert E. Feeney and Richard Eckroth officiating. Burial will be in North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, rural Mandan, at noon Monday, with military rites by Mandan Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 707 and American Legion Post No. 40.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, where a Knights of Columbus rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Sunday, followed by a parish vigil at 7:30.
Joseph was born March 8, 1926, in Moorhead, Minn. to Frank G. and Madeline C. (Hovel) McCann. He graduated from Mandan High School in 1944. He attended Bismarck Junior College and graduated in 1947. He continued his education at the University of North Dakota and graduated in 1949. Joseph worked for North Dakota Tax Department from 1949-1950. He entered the U.S. Army in 1950 and served in the Army finance department in both the United States and Germany. Joseph received an honorable discharge in 1952. He worked for Paul McCann and Lloyd Orser from 1952-1954. In 1954 he married Joan Hartley. They moved to Underwood, where he worked for Speilman Chevy and Implement from 1954-1958. They moved back to Mandan in 1958. He worked for Production Credit Association from 1958-1979. Joseph and Joan divorced in 1974, at which time Joseph retained custody of the three youngest children and raised them as a single parent into fine adults. In 1979, Joseph moved to Dickinson where he was the proprietor of an accounting office until May 1998.
Joseph was a life member of Knights of Columbus and American Legion. He also belonged to Elks, Eagles, Veterans of Foreign Wars, German Hungarian Club and St. Anthony Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Madeline; one brother, Herbert; one sister, Madeline "Sis" McCann; one brother-in-law, Darryl Carper; and one sister-in-law, Lois McCann.
